Agricultural Diesel; Changes affecting filter life.

3rd December 2019

;

You may not be aware but changes have been made to the specification of “Red” diesel. In January 2011 ultra low sulphur diesel was introduced (BS590) with the opportunity to include up to 7% bio-fuel made from FAME (Fatty Acid Methyl Esters). At the time of introduction FAME content was minimal, but in April 2018 laws were passed that required all fuels derived from renewable sources to have 7.25% FAME and in January 2019 this figure rose to 8.5%.

This change brings with it further challenges for consumers;-

1. Oxidation stability of the fuel is reduced leading to the formation of particles that can block filters and give the fuel a “shelf life”. A turnover of fuel every six months is recommended.

2. Fuel with FAME content is more prone to bacterial growth, which can lead to blocked fuel lines and filters. The presence of water in the fuel will encourage bacterial growth, sometimes known as “diesel bug”, highlighting the need for better fuel management and regular draining of the water drain valve.

3. Manufacturers can refuse warranty claims for fuel related components due to fuel being out of spec or contamination due to water ingress.

4. Water can get into fuel not only from badly sited tanks but from condensation also. Keeping tanks full to reduce the air content that can draw in moisture is advisable.

We have seen fuel filters blocking up more frequently since this change to fuel spec was introduced, due to the above issues. This is not an indication of filter inferiority but a drawback of using the fuel with such high levels of FAME added.

We recommend that good fuel management is vital to ensure maximum up-time of machines and that additives are available that can mitigate the effects of using the fuel with FAME content.

Speak to your local RVT Parts department for information on additives available that can be added to both bulk tanks and tractor tanks.
